NGV refuses $400K gift
The National Gallery of Victoria has rejected a gift of $400,000 from the estate of Len and Mona Fox. The Fox's wanted the bequest to go towards establishing an award for an Australian artist known as the Len Fox prize. The gallery initially accepted the gift but since changed its mind sighting ''it was not in the business of promoting and awarding prizes''. The estate's trustees had to ask for a court ruling to modify the will after the gallery's decision.
In brief:
- Neil Balnaves, the backer of the Art Gallery of New South Wales's new contemporary painting exhibition series, was recently profiled in The Australian. Read the full story here.

Cairns Indigenous Art Fair, 20-22 August 2010
Michael Snelling has been reappointed artistic director of the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair, which will be staged for the second time from 20 to 22 August 2010. Snelling plans to strengthen satellite exhibitions and events and develop new programs and partnerships for the 2010 fair.
Unfair rivals Art Fair
While art enthusiasts anticipate the themes for this year's Melbourne Art Fair, artists Sam Leach, Tony Lloyd and arts writer Ashley Crawford are busy curating an unofficial fair called Notfair. 32 Australian artists who are not be showing at the Melbourne Art Fair have been selected because the curators feel they are undervalued and deserve a bigger audience. The artists, including Bernhard Sachs, Murray McKeich and Akira Akira, will price their own work. The concurrent show has been welcomed by Melbourne Art Fair director, Bronwyn Johnson as one of many events that spring up around the fair and help draw attention to contemporary art by living artists. Notfair is to be held at Wardlow Art Residence in Fitzroy. Both fairs run from August 4 to 8.
